To the Greater Leavenworth Community,

This past week has tested us in ways few could have imagined. The expansive flooding from historic river levels and the devastation from powerful winds left much of our small city impassable, damaging homes and properties, and leaving thousands without power for days. Downed trees and debris transformed our city streets into obstacles, and yet, through it all, the spirit of the Leavenworth community has shone brightly.

I just want to say to our city crews, first responders, utility workers, and volunteers: thank you! Your tireless efforts to clear roads, restore power, and support neighbors have been nothing short of heroic. It was truly inspiring to see. Chelan County PUD did an amazing job getting power restored as quickly as they did.  And to every individual who lent a hand, shared a warm meal, or offered shelter—thank you for being the heart of this community.

We are not out of the floodwaters yet. More rain is anticipated, and forecasts predict high winds again in the coming days. Please remain vigilant, stay safe, and check in on your neighbors. For those needing to dispose of tree debris, the Leavenworth Cemetery will be open for drop-offs between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. through Friday, December 19, weather permitting.

We will be dealing with the aftermath of this for days, weeks, and for some, much longer. My heart goes out to those who were negatively impacted by this atmospheric event.  Neighboring communities in Chelan County and across the Cascades have also been hit hard and will remain in our thoughts as we all continue to recover.

Leavenworth’s iconic Village of Lights and Christmastown festival is not only a beloved annual tradition—it’s a vital season for our local economy. As local businesses reopen their doors, I encourage you to find ways to continue to support them this holiday season.

While originally intended for questions around utility rates, the city will be hosting an open house on Tuesday, December 16, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Council Chambers at City Hall (700 US Hwy 2). WSDOT will be there, too. All are invited to stop by. For more resource information and helpful links, you can visit col.dev.3sherpas.com/community/severe-weather-info/.

In moments like these, we are reminded of what makes Leavenworth truly special: our ability to rally together, to support one another, and to face adversity with courage and compassion. Let’s continue to be that community—one that lifts each other up and moves forward, together.

With gratitude and resolve,
Carl Florea
