What a summer it’s been at the Howard Hopkins Memorial Pool! With the 2025 season under wraps, we’re in reflection mode. We started with a goal: to open a refreshed and improved pool, with new filters, upgraded electrical systems, a recoated zero-entry, and resurfaced floors by Memorial Day weekend.

Planning efforts began early in the fall of last year. We did our best; however, surprises awaited us. Due to an unforeseen installation error with our new filtration system and weeks of supply chain delays, this year’s opening day for the pool was pushed to July 7th. Did you know that after following the required public bid award process, the City had to bring in a separate, alternate contractor to complete the project to ultimately open the pool this year?

Even with discounted season pass rates, we understand how frustrating the delayed opening was for everyone and truly appreciated your patience as our dedicated City and Pool Staff worked tirelessly behind the scenes to solve these unforeseen, complex problems.

A Summer of Ups and Downs

Our incredible Pool Staff took on a lot this summer. They worked extra hard and were able to extend the season by nearly three weeks this year, allowing us all extra time to enjoy the pool well into September. They also managed the implementation of a new online registration system, complete with key fobs, which will hopefully make next year’s registration a breeze. And during opening week, when our credit card system experienced a hiccup and our backup credit card system crashed, staff were there to help with a positive outlook, navigating the issue, whether you had cash, a local check, or an IOU invoice.

This season wasn’t without its obstacles. We faced challenges with several unfortunate pool closures due to accidental fecal releases and weather restrictions (i.e., lightning, air quality due to smoke). Public Works and Pool Staff worked diligently to reopen the pool as quickly and safely as possible every time. And after some adjustments to the swim diaper policy, your candid feedback helped us find a better solution. Your honesty and patience were invaluable, and we hope you felt heard.

To our amazing patrons—from the swim team to our lap swimmers, water exercise enthusiasts, and families—thank you for your steadfast support. You are the heart of the pool, and your dedication makes everyone’s efforts to keep our community pool open and operational worthwhile.

Looking Ahead to Next Summer

As we begin to plan for the 2026 season, we’re filled with gratitude and excitement for what’s to come. Your input is vital in helping us make next summer better.

Would you be willing to share your feedback in our end-of-season survey? The survey takes about ten minutes to complete, and your responses will help us understand what we did well this summer and where we can improve.

You can find the survey here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/2025PoolSeason.

Thank you for hanging in there with us this season. We can’t wait to see you back at the pool next summer!
