Pavement repairs planned for Chumstick Highway beginning Jan. 5

LEAVENWORTH – A contractor for the Washington State Department of Transportation will repair several sections of failing pavement on Chumstick Highway near Leavenworth beginning at 8 a.m. Monday, Jan. 5. Chumstick Highway is the detour for US 2 Tumwater Canyon, which remains closed from east of Coles Corner (milepost 85) to Leavenworth (milepost 99).

Repair work will continue through Monday night and until paving is complete, which is estimated for Tuesday midday. Travelers should plan for flagger-controlled traffic and delays until repairs are finished. Drivers are reminded that Chumstick Highway is a rural county road with lower speeds, bridge restrictions and longer travel times.

Repairs to US 2 Tumwater Canyon began Dec. 23, 2025. There is no estimated time to reopen. Pilot car remains in place on a 5-mile stretch of US 2 east of the summit (milepost 66-71) from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily and closes between 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. so the contractor can expedite emergency repairs.
